It’s very readable and fun... as a 74 year old who just spent 10 pre covid Years as a nomad... I’m right with you. What really got me moving and encouraged me to give up my permanent home was volunteering. I ended up loving the Buddhist nunnery in north India and spending 4 months a year there. Once you start roaming around you realize the world has a lot to offer and most of it is cheaper than California.. Now I just can’t stay put.. I’ll do that when I get old:)

I didn’t use the social apps but I am a natural

Talker who likes people. I always appreciate a sushi bar, a very comfortable place to dine alone.

Keep it up. The world needs international understanding . Travel helps, we are little peace ambassadors

Your expressive pictures tell a story with such joy. Leaving a not so happy, not what you hoped for, situation in Spain for the complete unknown of Berlin - gutsy. Knowing that at times you will be rejected, as you point out, and still going for it is a leap of faith with great rewards I find. Glad to hear you’re feeling better

In the end, I think Spain worked out as exactly as it was meant to... because otherwise I would have never discovered the beauty of Berlin (aka my new favorite city). thank you, jose!

I loved this story's triumphant arc! And these are also great tips for those of us not living in foreign cities. So many people are just looking for connection.

That's what surprised me most—just how many other people were in similar shoes and looking for friends like me! I felt like I was the only one, until other people said the exact same thing haha. Thank you so much for your lovely words

Great post! When I arrived in the foreign city where I was going to be living for a year (also in Germany, actually), one of my flatmates - at the time a complete stranger - advised me that 'to get to know a city you need to get lost in it'. Well, I get lost EVERYWHERE, and that idea of getting to know a place is to proceed with utmost caution, clutching to the coat tails of someone who's lived there forever, and to not let go until I have been guided all the way home again!

Rebecca! This advice is SO good. I've added it to my journal to remind me — when you're lost, you have to start speaking to people! During my trip, I was without a SIM card for a bit of it and had to rely on strangers for directions, which ended up leading to lots of fun conversations, so this is very very true.

Funny how we both started over in Germany; it's a beautiful place to begin again!

If I'm ever in that position again I shall avoid any advice to head out on my own (because it ALWAYS ends in tears) and will therefore shadow the very first pair of strangers I see. 'Excuse me, mind if I just walk with you for a bit.....?'

I love this story, the illustration of the graffiti, and the photo snaps! You’re the second person this week who has said they used Bumble BFF with great success, I love it!

Aw thank you, Liz! I can't say enough good things about Bumble BFF. Like the Tinders of the world, you kinda have to swipe through a lot of profiles to get the gems, but there are gems—I promise. :)

The storytelling via Photobooth snaps is brilliant! I really enjoyed this one, Tatiana, and appreciate your vulnerability. Making friends is difficult--even for those who seem to make friends easily.
